IRS Tax Problems & Resolution

IRS Payment Plans

Most people who owe the IRS can't pay everything at once, and they don't have to. We set up a payment arrangement that fits your budget, stops collection action and keeps you in good standing.

Overview

How Nelson & Associates handles IRS Payment Plans

The IRS offers several types of payment plans. Short-term plans give up to 180 days to pay in full. Long-term installment agreements spread payments over months or years, and many individuals who owe $50,000 or less can qualify for a streamlined agreement without detailed financial statements. Larger balances require full disclosure of income, expenses and assets.

When even a modest payment isn't possible, a partial-pay installment agreement or currently-not-collectible status may apply. We compare the options, propose the one that best protects your finances, and keep you compliant so the agreement doesn't default.

Who this is for

  • Self-employed people with large balances from prior years
  • Small businesses with income tax or payroll balances

Questions

IRS Payment Plans FAQs

6 answers to the questions clients ask most. Don’t see yours? Ask us directly.

Ask a question

How much will my monthly payment be?

For streamlined agreements, the payment generally must pay the balance within the remaining collection period, often up to 72 months. For larger balances, the payment is based on your disposable income under IRS standards.

Do I still owe penalties and interest?

Yes. Interest and a reduced failure-to-pay penalty continue while you're on a plan, so paying faster saves money.

What if I miss a payment?

The agreement can default and collection may resume. If something changes, contact us right away; agreements can often be modified or reinstated.

Will the IRS file a lien if I'm on a plan?

It may for larger balances. A lien can sometimes be withdrawn after you convert to a direct debit installment agreement.

Can businesses get payment plans?

Yes. In-business agreements are available for income and payroll taxes, provided the business stays current on new filings and deposits.

Do you offer IRS Payment Plans outside Florida?

Yes. Our office is in Doral, Florida, and we work with clients across the United States and abroad through secure uploads, phone and video meetings and e-signatures. South Florida clients are welcome to meet with us in person.
