Back Taxes Owed
Owing the IRS is uncomfortable, and the interest and penalties keep growing. We review what you really owe, remove what shouldn't be there and put the right resolution in place before collection action escalates.
How Nelson & Associates handles Back Taxes Owed
The IRS has a powerful set of collection tools, but it also offers several ways to resolve a balance: short-term extensions, installment agreements, partial-payment plans, currently-not-collectible status and offers in compromise. Choosing the right one depends on your income, assets, expenses and how much time remains on the ten-year collection statute.
We start by confirming the balance and checking for errors, missing payments and penalties that can be abated. Then we prepare the financial statements the IRS requires, negotiate on your behalf and make sure the agreement is one you can actually keep.

Back Taxes Owed FAQs
6 answers to the questions clients ask most. Don’t see yours? Ask us directly.
How long does the IRS have to collect?
Generally ten years from the date the tax was assessed. Certain events, such as bankruptcy or an offer in compromise, can extend that period.
Will the IRS take my house or my wages?
Wage garnishment and bank levies are common collection tools if balances aren't addressed. Seizure of a primary residence is rare and requires court approval. Acting early keeps more options open.
Can penalties be removed?
Often. First-time abatement is available if your compliance history is clean, and reasonable-cause relief applies when circumstances beyond your control prevented you from paying or filing.
What if I truly can't pay anything?
If paying would leave you unable to cover basic living expenses, the IRS may place your account in currently-not-collectible status. Interest continues, but active collection stops.
Do I have to file missing returns first?
Yes. The IRS will not grant most resolution options until all required returns are filed.
Do you offer Back Taxes Owed outside Florida?
