Non-Profit Organizations

Nonprofits are held to a high standard of transparency by donors, boards and regulators. We provide the accounting, reporting and tax compliance that lets you focus on your mission.

Overview

How Nelson & Associates handles Non-Profit Organizations

From applying for tax-exempt status to filing the annual Form 990, nonprofit compliance is detailed and public. We help organizations set up fund accounting, track restricted gifts, prepare board-ready financial statements and file the correct version of Form 990.

We also prepare for the audits and reviews required by grantors, Florida's charitable solicitation registration and the federal Single Audit rules for organizations that spend $1,000,000 or more in federal awards in a year. Our audit, review and compilation services are described on their own page.

Questions

Non-Profit Organizations FAQs

5 answers to the questions clients ask most. Don’t see yours? Ask us directly.

Ask a question

Which Form 990 do we file?

It depends on gross receipts and assets. Very small organizations file the 990-N e-postcard, mid-sized organizations may file 990-EZ and larger ones file the full Form 990. Private foundations always file 990-PF.

What happens if we don't file?

An organization that fails to file for three consecutive years automatically loses its tax-exempt status. Late filing penalties can also apply.

Do we need an audit?

It depends on your grantors, lenders and funding levels. Organizations spending $1,000,000 or more in federal awards in a fiscal year generally need a Single Audit.

Can nonprofits owe income tax?

Yes, on unrelated business income above $1,000, reported on Form 990-T.

Do you offer Non-Profit Organizations outside Florida?

Yes. Our office is in Doral, Florida, and we work with clients across the United States and abroad through secure uploads, phone and video meetings and e-signatures. South Florida clients are welcome to meet with us in person.
